  • If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn’t help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we’ve got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don’t want to do it. Pastor Bonus Icon

We give thanks to the Abbey and the Iconographer who have kindly given permission for us to use the image on our site

Icon by Rev. Pachomius Meade, OSB, Š Conception Abbey, Conception, MO 64433.

There is a stream of traditional icons often referred to as ‘Christo Pantocrator’ (Christ – ruler of all things) in which Christ has in his hands the orb and mace of imperial authority. In this icon the orb and mace are replaced with the shepherds staff (drawing in not fending out). The hand that holds the staff shows clearly the mark of the crucifixion (passion) whilst the hand held in blessing still bleeds.

The red garment and the blue outer garment remind us that Christ is both and divine, and the hand held in blessing forms the ‘O’ for Omnipotent, Omniscient, and Omnipresent, – God who is all powerful, all knowing, and always present.

The title ‘Pastor Bonus’ means simply ‘Good Shepherd’, and the icon reminds us that the faith is not simply about a new ruler,  but also more importantly about a new way of ruling.  see John 10:14-18 for the relevant passage.
